Welcome to the Creating Peaceful Schools Website!
Creating Peaceful Schools is a program of the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center, whose purpose is to work for a culture of peace through education, advocacy, and community building.
The Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center was established in 1969 as a focal point in the East Bay where the community could gather to create a "local voice for peace" to speak out against the wars in Indochina. Over a period of many years it has evolved into a Center that also addresses issues beyond war, related to the prevention of violence and promotion of social justice in the local community. To that end the Center has most recently been focusing on education and positively influencing the hearts and minds of our youth.
Over the years, educational programs addressing peace and justice have been developed for children of all ages, kindergarten through high-school and beyond. They currently include programs aimed towards middle and high school students, the Dennis Thomas Art & Writing Challenge and our Youth Activism Grants. In previous years we organized an annual conference, Creating a Peaceful School, aimed at educators and worked with a subcommittee of our Center, Diablo For Peace, comprised of youth in our community, to bring awareness to local issues, primarily on diversity.
For information on the winners of the 2024's Art & Writing Challenge and the Youth Activism Grant Awards, and the awards event on Saturday, May 11th, please go to the dropdown menu tabs noted above.
We'd love to hear your thoughts on these programs and suggestions for improvement!
